Aquaponics Campaign

"Aquaponics: Growing a Sustainable Future" is an $800,000 campaign that will add a self-sustaining Aquaponics program to our site and grow our successful education programs as we prepare for our 40th anniversary in 2014. Riverbend will build a 4,380 square foot greenhouse with an aquaponics system that will be a working model of sustainable agriculture combining aquaculture and hydroponics and incorporating “green technology” in an effort to balance environmental, social and economic needs. In a world that is facing water, energy, food and population challenges it is more important than ever that our youth grow up motivated to act responsibly and to help solve environmental problems.

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics has been widely determined to be the most sustainable, naturally grown agriculture for the future. The combination of aquaculture and hydroponics, Aquaponics is the science of growing fish and plants together in one integrated, soilless system. The recirculating system uses the fish waste to provide a food source for the plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in.

Riverbend will partner with another not-for-profit, Veteran Community Farms (VCF), to bring this project to fruition. VCF is dedicated to facilitating the reintegration of veterans into civilian society through the development of skills learned through the agricultural programs and they will run the daily operations of growing the crops and delivering them to market. Veterans will be offered a combination of employment, peer support and therapy. This timely and innovative partnership will contribute to the regional community in a multitude of ways, enabling both partners to change the lives of the people our respective missions serve.
