At Riverbend, we work to connect children to their total environment, which includes human land use through time. Our Lenape village features six interactive stations that teach students about the many aspects of the vibrant culture of the Lenape Native Americans. Students gain knowledge about Riverbend's former inhabitants while contemplating similarities and differences to their own culture.

Basic Lesson (1.5 hours)

Includes four stations for a maximum of 60 students

Home and Hearth
Students explore the different types of shelters used by the Lenape, and learn about their daily lives and culture around the fire.

Gardening and Foraging
Students forage for native plants, identify medicinal plants, and learn about a “Three Sisters” garden.

Many Gifts of a Deer
Students are presented with many parts of a deer and work together to determine how they were used by the Lenape.

Fishing and Hunting
Students learn about the tools the Lenape used and about the animals upon which they relied.

Extended Lesson (2.5 hours)

Includes the basic four stations plus two additional for a maximum of 60 students

Fire and Wood
Without metal tools, the Lenape used fire to help shape wood into useful items, including bowls, mortar and pestles, and even canoes. Students experiment with burnt and un-burnt wood to determine for themselves which is easier to shape.

Lenape Games
Lenape children played a variety of games to sharpen their hunting and other important life skills. Students participate in some of these games and build their own skills.
