Montgomery County Conservation District

“Conserving Natural Resources for Our Future.” That tagline belongs to the Montgomery County Conservation District (MCCD). Their mission is to protect and improve the quality of life of the residents of Montgomery County and surrounding communities by providing, in cooperation with others, timely and efficient service, education, and technical guidance, for the wise use of our soil, water, and related resources. MCCD is partnering with local organizations to complete 20 acres of riparian reforestation through the TreeVitalize Watershed program.

For 10 years, TreeVitalize has planted over 350,000 trees through the help of many partners and interested community volunteers in southeastern Pennsylvania. Since 2008, MCCD has generously awarded TreeVitalize grants to Riverbend towards our Woodland Restoration Project. Their generosity has resulted in over 2,400 trees and shrubs. This has enabled us to make significant strides in the restoration of the Riparian Forest Buffer Zone, reducing pollution into Saw Mill Run and improving the overall ecology of the site. This investment will reap benefits for many years to come and will enhance the outdoor educational opportunities for all visitors to Riverbend.

peco For almost 100 years, The Boeing Company has dedicated its philanthropic efforts towards supporting worthy causes that align with five focus areas: education; health and human services; environment; arts and culture; and civic engagement.

pecoAs part of these philanthropy efforts, the company supports programs that inspire students and encourage proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Riverbend is one such program that has benefitted from a Boeing grant, and with their help we have been able to take the Philadelphia Children Access Nature (P-CAN) program from a good idea to a replicable model impacting almost 1,000 children and 25 teachers this school year. P-CAN delivers developmentally appropriate STEM education to children from low-income urban environments and professional development for their teachers. Through hands-on, inquiry-based teaching students increase their science knowledge and inspire environmental stewardship.

In 2012, Boeing invested more than $48 million toward external education programs that aid teachers and school administrators in preparing students to be “globally competitive.” Riverbend is proud to have Boeing as a founding supporter of our underserved Philadelphia outreach programs.

peco PECO’s support of local non-profit environmental initiatives helps improve the quality of our environment; promote environmental education, conservation and preservation; develop cleaner sources of energy; and protect endangered species.

pecoThe PECO Energizing Education Program (PEEP) for local middle school students is one program that demonstrates PECO’s environmental leadership. Riverbend Executive Director Laurie Bachman is an original member of the steering committee, which developed the program. PEEP, designed in partnership with the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) and The Franklin Institute, is a project-based curriculum using hands-on activities to explore the sources and uses of energy and the important role of energy efficiency in environmental conservation. Since its inception in 2009, more than 65 schools and more than 65,000 students have participated in the program.

pecoPECO Green Region, administered by Natural Lands Trust, is another one of PECO’s environmental initiatives. Through PECO Green Region, the company provides grants to preserve and protect open space to municipalities in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties and to organizations in Philadelphia. Projects focus on the development of recreation trails, purchase of open space, planting trees and other vegetation, park planning and more. Since 2004, PECO has provided more than $1.2 million toward qualifying projects.

The Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are not only committed to professional football; they are also dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint. Since starting their “Go Green” initiative in 2003, the Eagles have made great strides in reaching their goals in energy conservation, green purchasing and recycling. They also recently completed a solar and wind project at Lincoln Financial Field which helps allows them to generate four megawatts of clean energy on site. When combined with their power-purchasing program, the Eagles are able to generate 100% of their energy needs through the wind and the sun. They have also made the switch from plastic cups and utensils to corn-based products, which are more eco-friendly and contribute to a recycling program that helps divert over 99% of the organization’s waste from landfills.

The Eagles pride themselves on giving back to the community to help protect the environment. Last spring members of the Eagles organization and Lincoln Financial donated their time and energy to plant trees in our Woodland Restoration area, contributing to the health of our 30-acre preserve.

We are very excited that Riverbend has been chosen to be an Eagles Community Partner. The Philadelphia Eagles are the Presenting Sponsor for Shiverfest this year, to be held on Saturday, October 12th. Come on out and meet Swoop, cheerleaders and other members of the Eagles organization!

Luckily, the connection doesn’t end when school lets out. Each summer we offer a week-long science enrichment camp to students from the programs who display an aptitude for science. The camp week includes exploring nature at their school, four field trips and an overnight camp-out experience at Riverbend. All children deserve the benefits that access to the natural world provides and we are honored to partner with the Norristown Area School District to deliver those experiences.

Norristown Area School District (NASD)

For the past seven years we have created meaningful connections with the students from the Norristown Area School District through our Outreach to Children/ Access to Nature Program. Since 2006, almost 8,000 NASD students have participated in a four-part program that includes professional development for teachers, in-class lessons and a field trip. Through this program we are able to create an environmentally minded community for children with little access to the natural world. Currently we serve every third and fourth grade student at the NASD’s six elementary schools focusing on Ecosystems and Water and the Watersheds

Philadelphia Science Festival

Since it's founding in 2011, the Philadelphia Science Festival has brought together more than 250 new partnerships and collaborations, taking science out of the classroom and into restaurants, museums, libraries, galleries and even street corners. The third annual Philadelphia Science Festival is set for April 18-28 with more than 100 thought provoking events. Continuing with our mission to teach children about environmental science, Riverbend has teamed up with the Philadelphia Science Festival as a core collaborator.

The Philadelphia Science Festival aims to provide opportunities for all Philadelphians to positively engage with and build a community around science by showcasing the role it plays in the city and region. The festival will engage and excite Philadelphians in the wonders of science and inspire them to interact with science, engineering, and technology events and activities on a regular basis.

Riverbend is proud to be hosting two events for the Philadelphia Science Festival. On Tuesday, April 23rd Riverbend welcomes diners to The Sustainable Table: A Dinner Experience. Chief Max Hansen will prepare a 4 course meal that highlights sustainable food production. On Friday, April 26th Riverbend will host star gazers for Astronomy Night. During the Philadelphia Science Festival week Riverbend can also be found at the Science Carnival on the Parkway and neighborhood library events at Logan and Wynnefield. The Philadelphia region has long been the birthplace of innovation and Riverbend is pleased to highlight our partners at the Philadelphia Science Festival.
